I was tasked with upgrading 2 of my Domain Controllers to Windows Server 2012 R2 a few months back. Prior to the upgrade, we were running Server 2008 R2 w/ functional levels of Server 2003. We had the same issue when upgrading to Server 2012. (You can use the ADPREP from server 2008 R2 to do the prep!!!) We experienced the same issue and after contacting support we have the following working sollution. I am bringing a Windows 2003 Server into an existing Windows 2000 domain, thus need to run adprep.exe. Because my Windows 2003 server is 64-bit, the media doesn't contain the 32-bit version of adprep (which I need in order to run on my Windows 2000 schema master).
